Kenya: new fee for national ID card replacement

Kenyan Immigration and Registration of Persons minister Otieno Kajwang has introduced 300 Kenyan Shillings fee for national ID card replacement 1 Kenyan shilling = 0.0116 US dollars. The reason for the decision was that the ID card, that was previously replaced free costs government over 1000Sh to produce and is often being handled carelessly by the citizens. The idea brought controversy to the parliament debate, some members insisted that it’s unfair to charge people for a national ID card while many are strugginling to survive. Minister insisted saying “It is a very precious document, and if you lose it we will ask you to pay only a fraction, (…) It is not about poverty but about taking good care of the document,”.
