Mexican Consulate ID card no longer valid in NC

According to the new bill tentatively passed by th North Carolina House of Representatives ID cards issued by Mexican consulates will no longer be valid to prove identity or establish residency in the state. Other benefits like Medicaid, state driver’s license will also become unavailable for immigrants whose only form of identification is consulate issued ID card. Sponsors of the bill, mainly Republican argue that ID card is unreliable, too easy to obtain and not protected enough against forgery. Critics of the bill say that consulate issued ID card is a valid form of identification issued by a foreign country. The bill may prevent parents from picking up their children at schools which require photo identification. Bill supporters also mention that foreign passports will remain a valid for of identification. A final vote on the bill is expected in next few weeks.

Florida ports ID badge; state, federal or both?

It has been 6 years struggle already for Florida ports to be able to issue photo ID badges and Florida Department of Law Enforcement to do background checks on badge applicants. As of now in many ports federal id badge is insuficient to enter and drivers need to get a state badge as well. Federal badge costs $132 and lasts 5 years while state badges can cost $25-85 plus $10-$35 annually to renew. Some commentators say the struggle is about money; security screening is a fairly expensive procedure and significant contribution to the state or federal budget.

get used to wearing ID badge while in the hospital

Another hospital asks visitors to wear ID badges while on the premises of the facility. Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, CA requires visitors to show photo ID card, takes a photo of the visitor and prints a disposable ID badge to wear while in the hospital. New policy gets mixed reactions from understanding to surprise. More and more hospitals across the country require photo ID to visit and some sort of ID badge to wear while visiting. Sometimes it’s a generic badge with a label of department person plans to visit while other hospitals use disposable photo ID badges.

Tennessee introduces new ID card and driver’s license design

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced yesterday will soon start issuing newly redesigned state photo ID cards and driver licenses.  It’s the first design change since 2003. The main purpose of the redesign is to improve security features as the department’s commissioner Bill Gibbons said “Tennessee driver licenses have not been updated in eight years, and the technology behind them is eight years old,”. The changes include:

  • new banner showcasing Tennessee landmarks and icons;
  • new background design;
  • enlarged organ donor symbol, when authorized;
  • multiple date of birth placements on front and back of the card;
  • vertical format to distinguish driving privilege from identification only cards;
  • digital portrait and signature, both stored in a permanent database, to easily verify identification;
  • lamination, with a tamper resistant coating and holographic designs;
  • machine-readable barcodes for law enforcement purposes; and
  • applicable class, endorsements, and restrictions printed on back of the card

Current licenses and ID cards would remain valid till its expiration date. New designs can be viewed here: http://www.tn.gov/safety/driverlicense/dlcards.htm
