new photo ID card for applicants waiting for US green card

according to Daily News U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has released a new photo ID card which combines Employment Authorization Document and Advanced Parole travel document. The new photo ID card that includes a fingerprint is available only for applicants who have filed adjustment of status application, paid $1070 and are awaiting decision for granting permanent resident status. The new ID card does not guarantee reentry to the US. Immigration lawyers criticize the new idea and say that USCIS should rather focus on clearing backlogs than issuing new photo ID cards to applicants with cases pending for years.

UK national photo ID card database destroyed

This was the final step of cancelling heavy criticized national photo ID card program. Large number of hard disk and backup tapes holding personal data of applicants have been destroyed. The idea of national ID card emerged on the wave of post 9/11 legislature to enforce security and became law in 2006. New law faced heavy criticism from civil liberty rights supporters. Conservative party made cancelling the bill one of its election promises. After winning the elections in 2010 prime minister David Cameron announced program to be cancelled as too expensive and threatening citizen liberties.

student photo id card not sufficient for voting in Texas

according to the new Texas state voting bill student ID cards will not be valid for voting. Bill passed last week in state senate (19 to 11) recognizes 5 forms of photo id cards for voting: driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, concealed handgun license and passport. Medicaid and student ID card were excluded as legislators think of them as lacking control of issuance. Senator Troy Fraser who authored the bill said “We have a hundred different institutions in Texas that are government institutions, so you could potentially have a hundred different ID cards,”. In order for the bill to become law it has to pass the House which seems certain as Republicans have strong majority of 101 against 49 Democrats who opposed the legislation in the Senate.
