Bill passed last week in state senate (19 to 11) recognizes 5 forms of photo id cards for voting: driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, concealed handgun license and passport. Medicaid and student ID card were excluded as legislators think of them as lacking control of issuance. Senator Troy Fraser who authored the bill said “We have a hundred different institutions in Texas that are government institutions, so you could potentially have a hundred different ID cards,”. In order for the bill to become law it has to pass the House which seems certain as Republicans have strong majority of 101 against 49 Democrats who opposed the legislation in the Senate.
