Starting in January 2011 Nigerians will get new ID cards. Document will carry biometric data and be a part of central identification system. Each Nigeria resident will get a unique identification number to prevent fraud. New system is expected to provide ID verification for government agencies as well as banks and schools The project follows a failed attempt to establish national identification system in 2001-2006 period. In 2003 large scale corruption scandal erupted linked with id card system purchase provided by French telecommunication giant Sagem. Nigeria has been notriuos for ID theft issues which resulted in ‘no shipping to Nigeria’ policy in many online stores.
