Effective July 1 2012 expatriates working in UAE will no longer need labor cards for employment. Emirates Identification Authority (EIDA) issued national id cards will be used to verify employment eligibility instead. All foreitgners have to apply for UAE national photo id card by June 1st for Dubai, April 1st for Abu Dhabi and February 1st for Sharjah; those who don’t obey the rules will be fined. The card for expatriates working in the private sector will be valid for 2 years and will cover family members. The new regulation is expected to makes everyone’s life easier as expatriates won’t have to apply and carry 2 separate documents and employers will have solid identification of the workforce. Elimination of the labor id cards is a part of larger project of integrating and linking many services into the national id card.
